Project summary

The Urban Section of the Bologna junction of the  High Speed Railway line Milan- Naples extends for approximately 12 km (from the bridge on the Savena river near S. Ruffillo borough, where Bologna - Florence section ends), to Lavino station (beyond the bridge on the Reno river)  where it connects with the Bologna - Milan section.  The whole Urban Section is divided into sub-sections, called “Lots”, each one of which was assigned to a different contractor, by means of a specific bid.

Lot 8b includes this cut and cover tunnel, the ones of the Interconnection for Venice and other smaller works. The construction site overlaps the railway area occupied by the existing lines for Pistoia, Milan, Verona and Venice, all exiting from the Central Station in direction north-west;

The last lot of the Urban Section (Lot 9) is entirely on surface, but nevertheless it requires some planning effort, because it crosses a river (Lavino) and two main roads (Bologna Highway Ring – so-called “Tangenziale”, and nr. 568 provincial road to Verona), and has two railway intersection (Verona Line and Freight trains line).
