Project summary

The work concerns the analysis of geomorphological and hydrogeological settlements that have occurred as a result of exceptional rainfalls occurred in the winter of 2014-2015, along the road network and neighboring slopes.

The high rainfall has led to an increase in the fragile general hydrogeological environment, both in terms of slope settlements, with a general increase in areas affected by erosive phenomena, as well as in terms of groundwater conditions. The result was a general rise in groundwater levels close to the ground level and for prolonged periods.

The climatic conditions of the area are characterized by long-lasting summers with strong ventilation and consequent evapotranspiration that results in a deepening of soil surface layer in suction. The retraction and cracking process involves a thickness of several meters called "active zones".

The retraction and cracking process involves a thickness of several meters called "active zone". In the wet winter period, the water infiltration into cracks to depths of several meters leads to swelling and soil movements of the ground that in the case of slopes can degenerate into real instability phenomena. This process is due to "Climatic loading" that is responsible for many settlements that occurred in the winter 2014-2015 after abundant rainfall.

ENSER Srl has carried out the identification and the detailed design of necessary interventions.

After the heavy rains of winter 2014-2015, there have been many settlements throughout the road and on adjacent slopes:

-              watercourse erosion;

-              excavation slope stability;

-              slope and road landslides;

-              Widespread presence of emerging water;

-              subsidence and cracks of road pavement after road section instability phenomena
