The port of Onne, in the Rivers State, Nigeria, developed in the early 1980's as a logistic base for the oil and gas offshore bases of Nigeria. The Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT), corresponding to the deeper portion of the Onne port, has been built along the river banks of the Ogu Creek, a tributary of the Bonny River, and of the Bonny River itself, for a total length of 3'250m, with 2'500m completed between 2003 and 2014.

The FOT water draft is 12m and provides a loading–unloading platform and berthing equipment for general cargo, container and offshore supply vessels of up to 66'000ton DWT.

The quays are designed for a uniformly distributed load of 60kPa (standard quays) or 120kPa (heavy load platforms) and also allow for the operation of mobile harbour cranes, reach stackers and multiwheel trailers.

Berths 7 and 8 are suspended deck on piles with a rear retaining wall, while all the other berths are closed quays with front and anchor reinforced concrete diaphragm walls.

The soft soil layers reaching a thickness of more than 15m in the quay area, originally occupied by swamps, have been replaced by preliminary dredging and reclamation with quartz sand, densified and stiffened by the installation of cast-in-situ driven piles.
