Project summary

The works designed by ENSER consist of the latest extension of the Freetown Container Terminal, in Sierra Leone, along the south bank of the estuary of the homonym river. The new area for the storage of containers has a surface of 35'000sqm and was created with a reclamation of about 500'000 cubic meters of sand.

The new quaywall will be able to receive containerships size WAFMAX, DWT 42'000ton, carrying 4'500TEU with a maximum draft of 23m. The structures are designed to host two Ship-To-Shore cranes on rails with a loading capacity of 62tons and an outreach of 47m.

For this project, ENSER has provided Eiffage the technical consultancy covering the following services:

  • Preliminary Design of the quay structures during the tender stage, with optimizations with respect to the initial design;
  • Detailed Design of the quay structures, one mooring dolphin, scour protection and civil works on the container yard;
  • Geotechnical characterization of the material to be dredged and of the new reclamation, before and after compaction;
  • Driveability analysis and review of site records after pile driving activities;
  • Design of the monitoring system for the real time measurement of quay wall movements, water levels and reclamation settlements (inclinometers, piezometers and magnetic extensometers);
  • Mooring analysis of the design ship and choice of the mooring equipment (bollards, fenders);
  • Technical support during the whole execution phase.
