Project summary

The Pavaglione of Lugo is a large historical building, with an approximately rectangular shape, which surrounds the Piazza Martiri. The building has a masonry bearing structure, except for the East side along Largo della Repubblica whose structure is made of concrete.

The size of the building is as follows:

  • total length = 145m;
  • total width = 90m;
  • eave height = 9.9m;
  • floor surface = 5'300mq.

As a consequence of the structural verifications of the building, for both the historical masonry part and for the East side made of concrete, tha main vulterabilities were identified and a number of remediation measures were defined.

The first intervention for the reduction of the seismic hazard were meant for the logge del quadriportico and consisted in the consolidation of the vaults above the arcades by inserting steel tie-rods on the 4 sides. Other interventions included:

  • the stabilization of the pediments with tubular tie-rods (resisting also to compression) maintaining in place the existing tie system;
  • the consolidation of the technical room built in masonry behind the public clock;
  • the securing of the decorations of the two main pediments;

Finally, during the restoration of the logge and the facades, while removing the existing plaster, some cracks of considerable size were found which required a specific study and localized consolidations of the masonry.
